Build basic garage storage shelves

A single 8 ft long, 4-shelf unit holds hundreds of pounds and costs about $120 in lumber.

Cut list (one 24" deep × 8 ft long × 6 ft tall unit)

  • 8× 2×4 @ 72" (vertical posts — doubled, 4 corners)
  • 8× 2×4 @ 93" (front/back stringers — 4 shelves)
  • 8× 2×4 @ 21" (side cross supports)
  • 4× 1/2" plywood @ 24" × 96" (shelf surfaces)
  • 3" deck screws

Steps

  1. Build two ladder frames (front and back): two long stringers + four cross supports each, screwed at the shelf heights you want (12", 30", 48", 66").
  2. Stand the frames up parallel and connect with the 21" side supports at each shelf level.
  3. Drop plywood onto each level and screw down at the corners.
  4. Anchor to the wall through a stud at the top — required so it can't tip.

Tips

  • Buy straight, dry lumber — sight down each 2×4 before buying.
  • In a Canadian unheated garage, use exterior-rated screws to resist rust.
  • Add a sheet of pegboard to one end for hand-tool storage.
