Choose the right interior paint sheen

The sheen matters more than the brand. Pick wrong and you'll see every scuff — or every roller mark.

Sheen guide

  • Flat / Matte — ceilings and low-traffic adult bedrooms. Hides drywall flaws best. Hard to clean.
  • Eggshell — living rooms, dining rooms, hallways. Most popular all-purpose finish in Canadian homes.
  • Satin — kids' rooms, family rooms, bathrooms. Wipes clean without shining too much.
  • Semi-gloss — trim, doors, kitchens, bathrooms with moisture. Durable and washable.
  • High-gloss — accent doors and furniture only. Shows every imperfection.

Canadian brand notes

  • Benjamin Moore Regal Select — premium, low-VOC, excellent coverage.
  • Behr Premium Plus — best mid-range value (Home Depot exclusive).
  • CIL Smart3 — solid budget pick at Canadian Tire and Rona.
  • Sico Cloverdale — good for cold-weather application.
