Hang heavy items with drywall anchors

The number-one reason things fall off walls is the wrong anchor for the load.

Anchor cheat sheet

  • Plastic expansion anchors — up to 5 lb. Pictures and light décor only.
  • Self-drilling threaded anchors (E-Z Anchor) — 25–50 lb. Towel bars, small shelves.
  • Toggle bolts / snap toggles — 50–100+ lb. TVs, mirrors, heavy shelves.
  • Studs (no anchor) — best for anything over 50 lb. Use a stud finder.

How to install a toggle bolt

  1. Drill the hole size listed on the package (usually 1/2").
  2. Thread the bolt through the bracket, then attach the toggle.
  3. Squeeze toggle wings and push through the hole until they pop open behind the drywall.
  4. Pull back on the bolt while tightening so the toggle grips.
  5. Tighten until snug — don't overtighten or you'll crush the drywall.

Canadian drywall note

Most Canadian homes built after 1970 have 1/2" drywall. Older homes may have plaster — use plaster-rated anchors or hit studs.

Editorial note. Wear appropriate PPE. When in doubt — especially with electrical, gas, or structural work — hire a licensed Canadian tradesperson. See our safety policy.
