Replace a kitchen or bathroom faucet

A new faucet is one of the highest-impact DIY upgrades. Most installations take 1–2 hours.

What you'll need

  • New faucet (Moen, Delta, and Pfister are widely stocked in Canada)
  • Basin wrench ($20)
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plumber's tape
  • Bucket and rags
  • Flashlight

Steps

  1. Shut off the water at the two valves under the sink. Open the faucet to release pressure.
  2. Disconnect supply lines with an adjustable wrench. Have the bucket ready.
  3. Remove the old faucet. Use the basin wrench to loosen the mounting nuts from underneath.
  4. Clean the sink deck with a putty knife and degreaser.
  5. Install the new faucet per the manufacturer's template. Wrap threads with plumber's tape.
  6. Connect new supply lines (replace them — they're cheap insurance).
  7. Turn water back on slowly and check every joint for drips. Tighten gently if needed.

Tips

Buy supply lines and a new shut-off valve at the same time. Canadian building code (NPC) requires accessible shut-offs on each fixture.
