Replace a kitchen or bathroom faucet
A new faucet is one of the highest-impact DIY upgrades. Most installations take 1–2 hours.
What you'll need
- New faucet (Moen, Delta, and Pfister are widely stocked in Canada)
- Basin wrench ($20)
- Adjustable wrench
- Plumber's tape
- Bucket and rags
- Flashlight
Steps
- Shut off the water at the two valves under the sink. Open the faucet to release pressure.
- Disconnect supply lines with an adjustable wrench. Have the bucket ready.
- Remove the old faucet. Use the basin wrench to loosen the mounting nuts from underneath.
- Clean the sink deck with a putty knife and degreaser.
- Install the new faucet per the manufacturer's template. Wrap threads with plumber's tape.
- Connect new supply lines (replace them — they're cheap insurance).
- Turn water back on slowly and check every joint for drips. Tighten gently if needed.
Tips
Buy supply lines and a new shut-off valve at the same time. Canadian building code (NPC) requires accessible shut-offs on each fixture.
