Safety first. Electrical work in Canada is regulated. Some provinces require permits for fixture changes; many do not for like-for-like swaps. Check your local Electrical Safety Authority. When in doubt, hire a licensed electrician.

Before you start

  1. Turn off power at the breaker.
  2. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the fixture to confirm it's dead.

Steps

  1. Remove the old fixture and disconnect the wires.
  2. Note the colours: black (hot), white (neutral), bare/green (ground).
  3. Connect the new fixture matching colour-to-colour with marrettes.
  4. Tuck wires into the box, secure the fixture, install the bulb.
  5. Restore power and test.
Editorial note. Wear appropriate PPE. When in doubt — especially with electrical, gas, or structural work — hire a licensed Canadian tradesperson. See our safety policy.
