Safety first. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Smell gas? Leave the house and call your utility's emergency line — do not flip switches.

Battery alarms

Replace the 9V or AA battery. Most alarms chirp for 30+ days after a low battery is detected.

Hardwired with battery backup

Kill power at the breaker, twist off the alarm, swap the backup battery, restore power. If it keeps chirping, the alarm itself is end-of-life (replace every 10 years).

Sealed 10-year alarm

No battery swap — the whole unit is replaced.

Still chirping?

Dust the sensor with canned air. Make sure nearby alarms are not the actual chirper.
