Safety first. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Smell gas? Leave the house and call your utility's emergency line — do not flip switches.

Step 1 — Stop the fill

Lift the tank lid. Push the rubber flapper down to close the drain at the bottom of the tank.

Step 2 — Shut the supply

Reach behind the toilet and turn the small oval valve clockwise until it stops.

Step 3 — Clear the clog

Use a flange plunger. Plunge straight down with firm strokes. If 10–15 plunges do not clear it, try a closet auger.

When to stop DIY

If multiple drains in the house are backing up, the clog is in the main line — call a plumber.
